The so-called Prince of the Catalan poets, Josep Carner, went into exile in Mexico in 1939 and few years later, he moved back to Europe, to Brussels. Professor at the university, close friend of Norberto Bobbio, Eugenio Montale or Giuseppe Ungaretti, member of the Catalan government in exile, and candidate for the Nobel Prize: Carner performed until his death as a real European intellectual of his time and never ceased to publish books in Catalan or play the writer’s role becoming, this way, a symbol of a country and a language banished.
However, Carner’s life and work have remained into kind of chiaroscuro that this book seeks to illuminate.
